Sophia

Sophia name meaning and origin

What does Sophia mean?

"Wisdom"

Sophia name origin:

Greek

Sophia is a name derived from the Greek word sophos, which means "wisdom." Historically, it is associated with Saint Sophia, who is said to have died from grief after her daughters died as martyrs. There are some questions about the validity of this story, and many view it as mythology.

In the Middle Ages, Sophia was used by European royalty, including Empress Sophia, wife to Emperor Justin of Eastern Rome during the 6th century. The German House of Hanover is responsible for a surge of popularity in Britain in the 18th century.Ā

Here in the United States, Sophia has been in the top 1,000 girl names since the Social Security Administration started keeping track in 1880. It's had a dramatic increase in popularity in the past few decades, even reaching No. 1 from 2011 until 2013. While it's waned some recently, it's still hugely popular and ranks in the top 10 girl names.Ā
