Luna

Luna name meaning and origin

What does Luna mean?

"Moon"

Luna name origin:

Latin

Luna is the Latin word for "moon," and it's thought to come from the even more ancient proto-Indo-European root word leuk, meaning "light" or "brightness." Luna also means "moon" in Spanish and Italian.

This name has history as the name of Luna, the Roman personification of the moon, who was often seen alongside Sol, the personification of the sun, in mythology.

Most commonly given to girls, Luna first appeared in the top 1,000 names in the United States in 1900, though it soon fell out of favor and disappeared after 1921.

Luna Lovegood, a beloved character in the Harry Potter franchise, made the name popular again: In 2003, the year Luna was introduced in the novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the name re-entered the top 1,000. It's been in the top 1,000 girl names in the U.S. ever since and has only gotten more popular, reaching the top 10 names in 2022.

American parents aren't the only ones choosing this name for their little girls – Luna has been popular in Australia, the United Kingdom, and many European nations since the early 2000s.
