Freya is a name with roots in Norse mythology – she was the goddess of love and fertility, and the daughter of the sea god Njord. Also ruling over battle and death, Freya is a strong name with a mythical history.

The name comes from an Old Norse word meaning "lady." It's also spelled Freja and Freyja.

Freya is only recently popular in the United States, first ranking in the top 1,000 girls' names in 2019. It's risen quickly in the years since, though, reaching No. 122 in 2022.
