Braxton is an English last name thought to come from the descriptors "Brock's town" or "Bracca's town" in Old English, which would have referred to locations in England where people hailed from.

Braxton didn't appear on the Social Security Administration's list of the 1,000 most popular baby names until 1985, when it ranked No. 907. It's been in the top 1,000 ever since and its most popular year was 2017, when it ranked No. 118.

Braxton enjoys a similar popularity in Australia, England, and Wales, and is very popular in New Zealand: It's been in the top 100 since at least 2010, peaking in popularity at No. 23 in 2015.
